Rosalinda Meyer Interview

By Judy Walters

November 01, 2007

Rosalinda Meyer is another long-term teacher at Thayer Central Community School in Hebron, Nebraska.  After graduating from Concordia Teachers College in Seward, she taught two years in Oxford before coming to TCCS where she has taught fifth grade for the last 36 years.

“The kids are different [today] than they were when I first started teaching,” she says. “Everybody is so busy.”  She also points out that these days teachers are expected to teach more subjects like Spanish and computer skills.  She teaches three core classes, social studies, science, and math.

No matter how times have changed, Mrs. Meyer’s care for her students remains a constant.  Shortly before school ends for summer break, she will ask them to describe their favorite memory of the year.  Usually they will describe one of the field trips, or social studies games, and invariably the discussion surprises the students when they realize how much they have learned that year.

Over the years Mrs. Meyer has learned many things about teaching.  One of her nuggets of wisdom is:  “The more you expect, the more you get.  If you don’t expect much, you don’t get much.”  Therefore she teaches her students about the rewards of responsibility and self-discipline, and they learn the fun of playing with a clear conscience.

Mrs. Meyer and her husband, Bob, live on a farm near Hubbell.  Their two children are in college, but each weekend will find their son back home doing chores on the farm where his heart is.

In her extra time, Mrs. Meyer likes to get together with her three sisters and scrapbook.  She has completed personal scrapbooks for each of her children and is now working on family tree scrapbooks for each of them.
