Nations Poetry Out Loud Contest
March 05, 2008
Students in Grades 7, 10, 11, and 12 recently participated in Poetry Out Loud, a national poetry recitation contest in association with the National Endowment for the Arts and Poetry Foundation and the Nebraska Arts Council. The contest is a way to honor the speaker, poem, and audience. Under the direction and instruction of Mrs. Anne Heitmann, Mrs. Kathy Dunback, and Mrs. Karen Boatright, students prepared for and took part in classroom competions. Poems were selected from an anthology of poetry.
The entire 7-12 student body attended an assembly featuring actress Pippa White. Ms. White also worked with participating classrooms. Students then learned about poetry through memorization and mastered their public speaking skills by performing their poems in front of peers.
Senior Brooke Dankenbring added, “I liked listening to others recite their poems.”
The following classroom competitors moved on to the school-wide competition, which was held on Feb. 13. 2008: Kirsten Van Cleef, Michael Elting, Kelsey Loontjer, Maurica Eshom, Brianna Pickering, Michael Hawkins, Tomi Cole, Tarryn Tietjen, and Russ Heitmann. Kelsey Loontjer was selected to perform at the statewide competition in Lincoln on March 8, 2008. The winner of the state contest will advance to the National Finals in Washington D.C. Sandy Hoins and Pastor Jeff Friesen served as judges for the school wide contest.
