SCIENCE…
Our class will begin the study of air and weather. We will observe temperature, rainfall, wind, clouds, and record this information on a weather chart. We will become familiar with weather terms such as: anemometer, cirrus, cumulus, meteorologist, stratus, thermometer, rain gauge, humidity, atmosphere, and weather vane.
SOCIAL STUDIES…
Students use map symbols to read a map of the United States. Next they trace their world address-going from planet and continent to country, state, city, and street address. They also identify cultural and natural features in the United States. Students are then introduced to the Equator and the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. They recognize the differences between continents and countries, as they identify our neighboring countries.
LANGUAGE ARTS…
Bravery often is associated with physical boldness and daring. However it also has much to do with moral courage. Defending an unpopular point of view because it happens to be correct, trying something new in the face of possible failure, and staying calm in a frightening situation are all acts of character. It is likely that students have performed brave acts some time in their lives, whether they realize it or not-perhaps in trying out for a team, in giving a piano recital, or starting at a new school.
In this unit the focus will be on uncovering the students’ conceptions or misconceptions concerning courage and helping them think about the many ways of being brave.
Some of the skills covered in this unit will include:
Long vowel sound double final consonants past tense
Compound words homophones prefixes
r-controlled words abbreviations suffixes
contractions consonant
blends synonyms base words
antonyms
capitalization of I and proper nouns
conjunctions and interjections
commas in dialogue
capitalization in titles and initials
apostrophes and colons
