The Thayer Central Titans boys varsity basketball team opened their season with a dominating 39-16 victory over the host Belleville Buffaloes last week. Utilizing a stifling defense, the Titans limited the Buffaloes to a total of just 2 points in the first and third quarters. The 16 points allowed established a new Titans single game record.
Leading the Titans efforts were seniors Seth Wiedel and Will Goldhammer. Wiedel scored 6 of his game high 14 points in the first quarter as the Titans raced to a 12-2 lead. Goldhammer finished the game with 11 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two assists. Wiedel finished the game shooting 7 of 8 from the floor and added six steals to go along with three assists. Junior guard Jeffrey Bantam added 6 points on 2 of 4 shooting and grabbed four boards. Junior Kesston Fink and senior Sam Wiedel added two points each. Defensively, the Titans forced 21 Buffalo turnovers and limited them to just 32% shooting from the field.
"We needed a game to see where we were at" added Titans head coach Mike Bantam. " It was great to see out defensive intensity be sustained throughout the game." "We certainly have some things to work on, but it was a good win." " That's always has been a tough place to play."
The Titans will next see action this weekend as they will travel to Friend to take on the Bulldogs on Friday, and will play host to the Fairbury Jeffs on Saturday.
