Titans Split Games

The Thayer Central Titans boys basketball team finished a weather shortened week by splitting two games as they defeated the host Friend Bulldogs on Friday by a score of 73-29 and fell to the visiting Fairbury Jeffs on Saturday 48-40. With these two games the Titans record stands at 2-1 for the season.
On Friday against Friend, the Titans broke open a ten point game at half by exploding for 32 points in the third quarter. Fueled by the inside combination of seniors Kory Klover and Will Goldhammer and the outside combination of senior Seth Wiedel and Junior Jeffrey Bantam, the Titans began the second half with a 21-0 run.
Goldhammer paced all Titans scorers with 16 points, while Bantam, Wiedel and Klover added 13,12, and 11 points respectively. The Titans blistered the nets, shooting 19 for 21 from the field in the second half. Goldhammer, Wiedel and Bantam each grabbed five rebounds to lead the Titans. Wiedel added six steals to go along with ten assists to lead the Titans in those categories. Senior Braden Burkey added six points, two rebounds, one block and four assists.
On Saturday against Fairbury, the Titans found the going a bit more difficult as the Jeffs brought a more physical brand of basketball to the court. After finding themselves trailing by 10 at the end of the third quarter, the Titans battled back and scored the first six points of the final stanza only to see the Jeffs put the game away late.
Leading the Titans against Fairbury were seniors Will Goldhammer, Seth Wiedel and Kory Klover. Goldhammer scored 18 points including 7 of 8 from the line. He also led the Titans with seven rebounds. Wiedel scored 11 points and dished out three assists. Senior post Klover added seven points of his own. The Titans were led defensively by seniors Braden Burkey and Sam Wiedel.
"We missed Tuesday and Wednesday's practices due to weather" added Titans coach Mike Bantam. "It didn't show on Friday,but it certainly was evident on Saturday". "We played great basketball in that third quarter against Friend and battled back late against Fairbury". "I couldn't be more proud of our team". " We're off to a positive start". The Titans will play two games this weekend as the will travel to Henderson to play Heartland on Friday and will play host to the Tri County Trojans on Saturday.Tip off for both contests will be at approximately 7:45 p.m.
