Titans Varsity Boys Sweep Weekend Games

January 04, 2010

The Thayer Central Titans varsity boys found out how important halfs of basketball games are as they turned two close contests at halftime into victories last week. On Friday, the Titans utilized a strong second half to put away a scrappy Heartland team 39-20 and on Saturday, the Titans pulled away in the final two quarters to defeat visiting Tri County 57-49. With the two wins, the Titans record stands a 4 wins against 1 loss heading into Tuesday's contest prior to the holiday break.

On Friday, the Titans found themselves in a slower paced game and were tied at the half 12-12 with host Heartland. At the start of the second half. the Titans went on an 11-0 run to seize control. The Titans outscored the Huskies in the second half 27-8 to seal the victory.

Leading the way for the Titans were seniors Kory Klover, Seth Wiedel and Will Goldhammer. Klover posted 12 points to lead all scorers, while Wiedel hit for 11 and Goldhammer added 8. Sam Wiedel led the Titans with 8 rebounds. Seth Wiedel dished out 6 assists and senior Braden Burkey added two steals.

On Saturday, the Titans found themselves trailing at half to a hot shooting Tri County team 37-35, only to outscore the visitors 22-12 in the second half to snare the victory. A trio of Titans was in double figures for the game offensively: however it was the defensive efforts of two Titans that turned the tide in the second half.

Led by seniors Braden Burkey and Sam Wiedel, the Titans held the Trojans to just 3 third quarter points after the visitors had posted 21 points in the second quarter. The duo was responsible for guarding the Trojans main offensive threats and held them in check the entire second half. Fellow seniors Kory Klover, Will Goldhammer, and Seth Wiedel posted 20, 18, and 12 points respectively to lead the Titans scorers. Klover 9 of 14 from the floor included 16 points and along with Goldhammer's 12 in the first two quarters, kept the Titans close.
