Titans Third at Holiday Tournament
January 05, 2010
Coming back from the five day break, the Thayer Central Titans boys split games in the Freeman Holiday Tournament to garner third place. The Titans fell to host Freeman, 57-34, and then defeated Palmyra 76-66 behind a record setting effort by senior Will Goldhammer in the the consolation game. With this split, the Titans record stands at five wins against two losses going into the New Year.
Against Freeman, the Titans trailed by only five at half, but were unable to overcome the hot shooting of the host team in the third quarter. The Titans were hampered by foul trouble and were unable to mount a charge in the fourth quarter. The Titans were led by seniors Kory Klover, Seth Wiedel and Will Goldhammer. Klover led all scorers with eight, while Wiedel and Goldhammer added six each. Junior guard Jeffrey Bantam added five points. Klover led all rebounders with five. Wiedel posted four and fellow senior Sam Wiedel grabbed three.
"We didn't match up too well with their size" added Titans coach Mike Bantam. " We thought we could attack them by spreading the floor a bit and playing to our strength, but they played such a physical brand of defense without fouling, it was difficult for us to get anything going".
In the consolation game against Palmyra, the Titans were paced by a record setting performance by senior Will Goldhammer as they won 76-66. Goldhammer poured in 42 points that included 12 of 14 shooting from two and 5 of 8 from three and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Titans. His efforts established a new Titans school record for points in a game eclipsing the old mark held by former Titans Drew Onnen and Caleb Kenner. His 12 two point field goals also tied an existing record held by Lance Pachta for most in a single game. Goldhammer's record setting effort included 14 fourth quarter points that helped the Titans hold off a late Plamyra rally.
Also contributing to the Titans victory were seniors Seth Wiedel and Kory Klover. Wiedel scored 19 points, handed out 10 assists and grabbed 9 rebounds, while Klover added 8 points and six rebounds. Senior Sam Wiedel grabbed 8 boards and junior Jeffrey Bantam dished out five assists. The Titans shot 63% from the floor in the victory.
"Will's performance was one for the books" added Bantam. " He was our finisher out there in the fourth quarter when they made it close". "He was very difficult to defend and would be the first to tell you he had some great passes from his teammates throughout the game that led to easy scores". " I thought that Sam had a great tournament for us as well with his defensive efforts and his rebounding".
After the freshmen boys game with Tri County here at 7:00 pm on Thursday, the Titans varsity will host Superior on Friday night and Deshler on Saturday. Both varsity games will begin at approximately 7:45 pm.
