Titans Drop Two SNC West Foes
January 25, 2010
Turn about is fair play when it came to the Thayer Central Titans boys basketball team this past week. The Titans, who fell to a couple of hot shooting teams last week, put on a perimeter shooting display of their own this week as they defeated the Superior Wildcats on Thursday by a score of 52-42, and the Sandy Creek Cougars by a score of 54-47 on Saturday. The Titans record now stands at 8 wins and 4 losses.
On Thursday, the Titans turned a three point lead at halftime, to double digits late. Leading the Titans offensively was junior guard Jeffrey Bantam who registered a career high 31 points on 9 of 15 shooting that included 7 of 13 from behind the arc. His seven threes tied a Titans school record established by Chris Long in 2007. He was also a solid 6 of 6 from the line and added five rebounds. Seniors Will Goldhammer, Kory Klover, and Seth Wiedel all added 8 points each. Senior Sam Wiedel led the Titans rebounders with 9, while Goldhammer added 6 and Seth Wiedel grabbed 5 and dished out 8 assists.
On Saturday, the Titans came out firing and led by nine at half behind 7 of 10 shooting from behind the arc. Key second half baskets by seniors Braden Burkey, Kory Klover, and Seth Wiedel as well as one by junior Kesston Fink allowed the Titans to hold off the Cougars attempts at a come back. Burkey returned to the Titans lineup this week after missing last week's games due to illness, while Fink received his first start after senior Sam Wiedel was unable to go due to illness. Fink added 6 points and 5 rebounds, while Burkey added 4 pints, 4 rebounds and two assists.
Leading the Titans offensviely against Sandy Creek was the scoring quartet of seniors Will Goldhammer, Seth Wiedel and Kory Klover, and junior Jeffrey Bantam. Goldhammer posted a double-double to lead the Titans with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Wiedel added 11 points and dished out 6 assists, and Klover scored 8 points that included a perfect 2 of 2 from behind the arc. Bantam added 9 points on 3 of 6 shooting from three.
