February 02, 2010
The Thayer Central Titans boys varsity found the going difficult last weekend as they dropped two close games. On Friday, the Titans fell to host Centennial by a score of 49-45, and on Saturday, the Titans fell to visiting Cross County 76-74. With this weekend's games, the Titans record now stands at 8 wins and 6 losses.
On Friday, The Titans, held in by the hot hand of senior Will Goldhammer, tied the game late in the fourth quarter only to see Centennial make a couple of plays down the stretch to seal the win. Goldhammer led all Titans with 24 points. Senior Seth Wiedel added 8 points and 8 assists, while junior Jeffrey Bantam scored 7 points and led the Titans with 5 rebounds. Senior center Kory Klover added four points.
On Saturday, the Titans lost their halftime lead, and then gallantly fought back behind the efforts of senior Kory Klover to tie the Cougars, only to see them hit their free throws late. Four Titans hit double figures in the game led by Klover. Klover scorched the net with a career high 29 points on 14 of 19 shooting and grabbed two rebounds. The guard trio of seniors Seth Wiedel and Will Goldhammer as well as junior Jeffrey Bantam added 13, 10 and 13 points respectively. Goldhammer led all Titans rebounders with 7, while Bantam and senior Braden Burkey added 5 a piece. Senior Sam and Seth Wiedel led the Titans with 5 assists each. "We played well both nights, but just couldn't finish" added Titans head coach Mike Bantam. "We had our opportunities late in both games."
