The Thayer Central Speech Team accomplished a huge achievement as every participant received a Superior rating in the Kevin Heineman Memorial Tournament at Hastings College on Saturday, January 23. Other schools participating were Arapahoe, Centura, Grand Island Central Catholic, Grand Island High, Harvard, McCool Junction, Red Cloud, Silver Lake, and Superior.
Leading the Titans was Courtney Yoachim with a double medal performance. Courtney received fifth place in Serious and seventh place in Poetry. Russell Heitmann received second place in Persuasive. The OID also brought home fourth place medals. Members of the OID include; Sara Bulin, Nathan Seaman, Joseph Dougherty, Clinton Rosencrans and Russell Heitmann.
Since the coaches were not able to see the judging sheets during the day, it was not until awards that a mistake was recognized by the coaches. The Coaches brought the mistake to the attention of the tournament director. After showing them the tabulation sheets the college did realize that Nathan Seaman, Clinton Rosencrans, and Tarryn Tietjen were to be in finals. When this mistake was brought to the attention of the director the following students received finalist trophies.
Many parents and supporters came to the all-day meet to cheer the Titans on. The team and their coaches, Jana Tietjen and Justin Bomar, express their appreciation for the loyalty from their fans. The Titans speak on Saturday, February 6th, at the Crete Speech Invitational in Crete. All interested parents and supporters are invited to come see the entire team compete at this highly competitive meet.
