Hastings College Speech team visited the Thayer Central Intermediate School on Wednesday, February 10th. College students Trevor Brass, Matt Cashoili, Hannah Davis, Hannah Duke, Mike Dvorak, Patrick White, Makayla Jones, and Corey Reutlinger arrived at noon with pizza for the high school speech team. While enjoying the lunch the college students introduced themselves and talked about the events they participate in. Christopher Scott, assistant speech coach, also visited with our high school students about Hastings College, their speech camp, and the National Tournament the college participates in. This was an excellent opportunity for the high school speech team to ask questions and learn more about the college.
In the afternoon the college students visited the 5th and 6th grade students and demonstrated interactive warm ups that the college does before each speech meet. These warm ups not only energize your body, but help with articulation as well. Hopefully, these warm ups will help the 5th and 6th grade students prepare for the Woodmen Speech contest in March. After warm ups the Thayer Central High School speech team performed their Oral Interpretation of Drama (OID) for the students. For those of you not familiar with speech, OID is an event that consists of three to five students. The manuscript must be an original cutting of a play and movement is limited to suggestion rather than that of realistic acting. Costumes, makeup, lighting, and sound effects are not allowed. The students are also not permitted to touch one another and if the script calls for more than five characters, students may read more than one character. This year the students wanted to do a cutting from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." Mike Dvorak from Hastings College also performed for the students. Everyone was amazed by his talent as he was given one and a half minutes to write a five minute speech. With only a note card, Mike performed his speech with excellent speech structure and content. Later in the afternoon the high school speech participants performed their individual events for the college and were given helpful suggestions and comments
As for upcoming public events: Hastings College Speech Team will be hosting a pre-nations showcase on Sunday, march 21 at 3:00 p.m. Thayer Central Speech Team will be competing at David City for the Conference speech meet on Wednesday, February 24th.
