February 23, 2010
The Thayer Central freshman/sophomore team won the championship in the Deshler Invitational tournament last weekend. The Titans defeated Friend in the first round by a score of 39-26 and Deshler in the championship game by a score of 29-28.
Against Friend, the Titans broke open a close game at half by outscoring the Bulldogs 26-11 in the second half. Leading the Titans offensively was sophomore guard Brayden Hergott. Hergott scored 8 points: while a trio of Titans freshman, Macaulay Mumm, Dietrich Brinegar and Brian Loontjer each added 6 points.
In the championship game against Deshler, freshman Brian Lonntjer's conventional three point play with 23 seconds remaining lifted the Titans to the Title. Loontjer took a pass off a cross screen on the black and scored in heavy traffic, drawing the foul in the process, and subsequently knocked down the free throw to provide the Titans with their winning margin. Loontjer and classmate Macaulay Mumm each scored 7 points to lead all scorers. Sophomore Brayden Hergott added 6 points and freshman Kalen Wenske scored 4.
Defensively, the Titans were led in the tournament by Wenske, Mumm, Loontjer, Hergott, Tanner Vodicka, Trenton Tietjen and Gregory Dightman. The Titans rebounders were led by Cody Mumm, Brinegar, Loontjer and Hergott.
