In Science this quarter we were focusing on the Grand Canyon. In Unit 6 we worked with times lines and geological time. We learned that geological time starts with zero or today and ends on a certain date. For the Grand Canyon activity we wrapped a rope all the way around the room that was 45 meters long. And then we also labeled rock layers and their eras they occurred in. Did you know that there was a great unconformity in our earth’s history? Unconformity means that there was a huge gap of time; in this case there was a long time where no rock layers formed. It was either from no deposition or no erosion happened. For the intervals on our timeline, 1 cm equals 1 million years. Another activity we did was a smaller version of the timeline, but on paper. We labeled all the eras, periods and colored the rock layers. And then when they were finished we hung them out in the hallway so everyone could compare. We learned a lot about time in this unit and learned new things about the Earth that most of us didn’t know.
