Is Anything Alive?
Is Anything Alive? 8th grade students are working on the characteristics of living organisms. In this activity the students observe and illustrate changes in 5 vials full of different materials. They materials have different kinds of liquid added to them which turn out to be : Salt Water Sugar Water Water Students analyze the results and compare to the 7 characteristics of living things: 1) They grow 2) Respond to the environment 3) They exchange gases 4) They reproduce 5) They eliminate waste 6) They need water 7) They need food {energy or nutrients}. The students are now studying how to extend their senses with using a microscope properly.
