On Friday, March 23rd, the Thayer Central Speech Team completed their season at the C2 State Speech Meet, held once again on the campus of the University of Nebraska – Kearney. Thayer Central finished the meet in 3rd place as a team, the highest team finish in program history. In achieving the feat, Thayer Central took home four medals in individual events.
The medalists for the Titan Talkers consisted of three juniors. Maggie Harris earned 2nd place medals in both Poetry and Serious Prose. McKenzie Johnson won 4th place in Informative. Holly Timmerman took home 6th in Persuasive.
In total, Thayer Central qualified 9 entries and 10 students for the competition. In addition to the medalists, other Titan performers on the day included Senior Dalton Williams (OID), Senior Cade Friedley (OID), Junior Dakota Cherney (Entertainment and Humorous Prose), Junior MaryRuth Dodes (OID), Junior Keegan Casey (Duet Acting), Junior Dylan Fischer (Duet Acting), and Sophomore MicKael Halverstadt (OID and Extemporaneous).
“We’ve taken big steps as a team and as individuals this year,” said Thayer Central Coach Justin Bomar. “This has been a record year in many respects for our team, but the biggest achievement has simply come from seeing the care and competitiveness grow and grow with all of our students. This has been a special group.”
On the season, Thayer Central did set a number of programs firsts. Their team win in the C2-4 District was the first in Thayer history. The 3rd place finishes at State and in the Southern Nebraska Conference Meets marked highest finishes as well. In total, Thayer Central had 31 students compete throughout the season.
