6th Grade Attends Homestead National Monument Science Day
On Monday, August 27th, the Thayer Central 6th grade attended a science workshop at the Homestead National Monument. The workshop was a combined effort of ESU 5 and the National Park staff. Throughout the day students rotated through 3 activities:
1. First was an entomology activity where students ventured into the native tall prairie and captured insects from each of three categories, recorded their capture on iNaturalist, and then used the internet to help identify their captured insect. All insects were then released back into the prairie,
2. 6th graders then used problem solving skills to unlock a break-out box. The group of Thayer Central students pictured were the only group of the day to solve the series of breakout boxes.
3. The last activity of the day dealt with invasive species. Again the students viewed the tall prairie, then returned to a classroom where groups researched and reported on invasive species that are affecting Nebraska.
Students will return to Homestead National Monument in January for another series of activities.
