TC Junior High Math Contest

by K Lukert

May 12, 2008

What is the square root of the product of 4 and 9?  What mathematical term means “same size, same shape”?  These were two of the many questions students tried to solve quickly and correctly to take home the gold medal from Thayer Central’s junior high math competition on Wednesday, May 7.  Nine schools, including Deshler, Deshler Lutheran, Bruning-Davenport and host Thayer Central, were involved in the competition.

Each school was represented by nine students, three each from the 6th, 7th and 8th grade levels.  All participants took an individual test, followed by a team round, then competed in the popular math quiz bowl.  Medals and trophies were awarded to the overall top teams and individual winners of the three components.

The contest, which figures to become an annual event, was organized by math teachers Mrs. Lukert and Mrs. Vorderstrasse.  High school members of TC’s math club, Mu Alpha Theta, assisted with the competition.
